Confirmation of relevance Dear Industry Colleagues It has been an exciting and successful year to have served as ASA president. In my first letter at the beginning of 2012, I emphasized my 100% commitment to continuing the fine traditions of ASA and also to enhancing the association’s value to all our stakeholders. I discussed how ASA had recently gone through a reemergence of relevance and that it would be a priority of mine to continue that momentum throughout the course of the year. I am happy to say that our commitment has proudly been met with resounding affirmation. As mentioned in my address to our membership at NetworkASA 2012 in October and in last month’s letter, in 2012 ASA met and/or exceeded its goals in almost all areas, strengthened its relationships with the various industry buying groups, achieved consistent membership participation by our national members and is about to complete its most successful Supplier Partnership year since the program’s inception. Perhaps our most prominent 2012 achievement is that ASA reached net membership growth for the first time in more than 20 years. It is safe to say we’ve confirmed the reemergence of relevance that we were experiencing at the beginning of the year. Our achievements have not been met without the outstanding efforts of many. As we move into 2013, I feel it is very important we thank our regions, which have allowed me the opportunity this past year to speak at their various events and bring ASA’s message to the forefront. Without strong regional participation, our membership successes would not be near what we have achieved. I would like to thank ASA’s divisions and councils, which also have played an integral part in ASA’s reemergence. Groups such as Young Executives, the Vendor Member Division, and the Plumbing and Industrial Piping divisions continue to build strength and gain momentum. I look forward to seeing this momentum continue into the new year and beyond. I would be remiss if I did not recognize my fellow members on the ASA Board of Directors and Executive Committee for keeping me focused as president throughout the past year. Without the valuable counsel and assistance of these industry leaders, 2012 would have been a much more challenging year. I would also like to thank my predecessors Bill Kenny, Frank Nisonger, Jeff New, Joe Poehling and Joel Becker for their invaluable advice throughout the course of the past year. In addition, I want to take the time to thank the ASA staff, led by Mike Adelizzi, for their constant hard work and diligence. They have made my job as ASA president efficient and productive, and I would expect more of the same to be true for incoming ASA President Jeff Pope of F. W. Webb. I am confident Jeff ’s 2013 will be as rewarding and beneficial for him as 2012 was for me. Last, and most certainly not least, I would like to thank all of you – the professionals, leaders and visionaries – who make this industry great. You should all congratulate yourselves as we move into the new year as an active and thriving industry. Let’s all promise to work together, continue the momentum and build on our many strengths in 2013. Thanks to all!
