The XR20-W works in conjunction with XL-80 or ML10 laser interferometers, as the system combines the readings of the rotary calibrator and laser to determine positioning errors in axes under test. The rotary axis calibrator is generating positive feedback from the field with its advanced, compact design allowing easier set-up and use. Application flexibility is extended by the addition of new off-axis rotary software that allows the XR20-W to be used even when it cannot be positioned directly on the rotary axis under test. The software calculates true position and records axis performance and errors when compared to the intended target. The test takes about ten minutes and results are sent to a PC via Bluetooth® connection. It was validated by PTB, Physikalisch- Technische Bundesanstalt, the German national metrology institute providing scientific and technical services. A major requirement for traceable cam profile measurement is validation of the evaluation algorithms. This allows the comparability of evaluation strategies, specifically evaluation of the effects of the software independent from the remaining, purely mechanical, measuring process. For certification purposes of its TURBO SHAFT evaluation software, Hommel-Etamic released its algorithms for camshaft measurement, which have been optimized over decades of use, to the PTB for validation. The basis for software certification consisted of synthetically generating test data by the PTB for all feature specific camshaft parameters. Comparing the reference results with data sets from simulated measurements resulted in a measurement uncertainty of less than 0. 1 µm. According to the company, as a result, Hommel Etamic’s TURBO SHAFT is the first PTB-certified camshaft evaluation software. The development of a camshaft standard also serves the primary goal of reducing measurement uncertainties. The workpiece-like standard has two eccentric circular disks and two cams. Eccentric center holes enable calibration of the eccentric circular disks for shape and dimensions in the centered position. The eccentric positioning in relation to the reference surfaces leads to the desired stroke movement when measuring on a camshaft measuring device.
