(Horsham, Pa.) named Robert Roof as project manager. T he millennial generation, born between 1980 and 2000, numbers more than 80 million, and they are entering the workplace in greater numbers each year. For HVAC contractors, this trend is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, younger workers are needed to replace the large number of service technicians who are quickly approaching retirement age, but on the other, this generation comes with a unique set of challenges. As Mike Atchley, president, Atchley Air, Fort Smith, Ark., noted: “Millennials require a lot of attention. They are extremely confi-dent in their abilities – sometimes a bit too confident – and attention is needed to make sure they don’t get in over their heads. They aren’t afraid of anything, but it does take more work to keep them happy and focused.” Roof Manufacturers • Daikin McQuay (Minneapolis) was recommended for ISO 14001:2004 environmental man-agement system certification for its Staunton, Va., facility. • Reliable Controls (Victoria, Brit-ish Columbia, Canada) is the 2013 recipient of the Capital Regional District’s EcoStar Community Envi-ronmental award. • Hartzell Air Movement (Piqua, Ohio) named Brian Payne as vice president of international sales. • Danfoss (Baltimore) fully acquired Sauer-Danfoss (Ames, Iowa), which will change its name to Danfoss Power Solutions , a new business segment within the Danfoss Group . • Carrier Corp. But with as much as 40 percent of that air leaking out before it ever reaches the vent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), it seems there is still room for improvement in most customers’ homes. Enter the HVAC technician. As the boots on the ground, your technicians are the face of your business, interacting daily with homeowners and turning them into loyal customers. But the best technicians not only solve the problem at hand — they also listen to the customer’s concerns, keep their cus-tomers’ best interests at heart, and recognize selling opportunities when they see them. And for the many current and potential customers out there who have leaky, dirty, or improperly sized ductwork, contrac-tors have nearly unlimited opportunities to improve efficiency, comfort, and IAQ in those customers’ homes while bringing in additional business. Ductwork Distress Historically, ductwork has not been a top concern for homeowners, despite the fact that the HVAC system is often the biggest single energy consumer in a home, according to Bob Reid, technical director for the Spiral Duct Manufacturers Association (SPIDA).
