All-Max Plumbing: Creating a recipe for success After spending some time with Petra and Uwe Schlueter, few would argue they have identified and mastered the right mix of ingredients for running a successful plumbing business in today’s competitive environment. “When we took over the family business in 2000, there were a lot of great things already in place,” says Uwe Schlueter, owner of All- Max Plumbing in Apex, N.C. “A strong desire for customer satisfaction, a belief in specifying quality plumbing products and mutual respect for employees were just a few of them.” But the list of key ingredients is long on Schlueter’s secret recipe. At the top of the list … a lasting relationship with Gerber Plumbing Fixtures. “We’re very picky about the products we specify,” Schlueter says. “Quality, ease of installation and fair pricing are just a few components we search for when we build out a spec. That’s why Gerber has become our go-to brand for toilets.” According to Schlueter, Gerber’s Maxwell toilet is high on the company’s specification lists when it comes to residential new construction and light commercial work. And, when All-Max gets a chance to upgrade, it immediately turns to Gerber’s Viper or Avalanche lines. “Our team and our customers now gravitate to the ADA ErgoHeight toilets with the elongated front,” Schlueter explains. “Elongate disbe coming more of the standard for us (vs. The round front). And the ErgoHeight brings in a new level of comfort.” As a plumber with his green plumber certification and one who often partners with Energy Star builders, Schlueter appreciates gerber’s array of 1.28-gpf toilet options (all of which are WaterSense-certified). “They deliver the carry-through that’s necessary and we never have to worry about performance,” he notes. And worry-free product options are a big piece of All-Max Plumbing’s overall recipe. According to Schlueter, product call-backs can cost his business $70-plus per service trip. That adds up when you’re installing hundreds of products each week. But with Gerber, call-backs are rare. “We just don’t have to worry about Gerber products,” Schlueter adds. “The quality is among the best in the industry, they’re great to install and my distribution partners make accessing the line easy for me. For our team, Gerber sets the standard.” That Gerber standard has come from 80- plus years of history, research and development, customer partnerships and a sense of pride for manufacturing some of the industry’s best products. Gerber toilets often found on All-Max Plumbing’s spec lists feature a 3-in. Flush valve for quick, effective clearing, Fluidmaster® fill valve, dual-fed siphon jet and multipoint tankto- bowl connections to ease installation and minimize cracking. For plumbers seeking brass options, Gerber has several collections of decorative faucets, many of which round out an entire suite of toilet, sink and accessory choices. “I’m proud of what our team has done together over the years,” Schlueter adds. “We’ve grown from five to 38 people and have worked on some of the region’s best projects. It’s partners such as Gerber who have been a key ingredient to the successful business we’ve become.” UltraPure valves: More selection for purer water Look for the white handle When you need lead-free* valves for potable systems, Milwaukee Valve provides the widest coverage of products for virtually every potable water application covered by the new standards of U.S. Senate Bill S.3874. Caustic chemicals, extreme furnace heat and highly corrosive gases present serious health and safety challenges that must be addressed. Desler set out to devise a plan with safety shower and emergency eyewash solutions for multiple metal manufacturing facilities that met OSHA Standard 29CFR1910.151 requiring employers to provide facilities for quick drenching or flushing upon employee exposure, as well as the ANSI Z358.1 drenching standard that specifies emergency showers deliver tepid water at a minimum of 20 gpm for at least 15 minutes. Challenges Remote location: Facilities are located 70 miles from an emergent care facility. Large-scale project: There were power and water distribution challenges, as well as utility cost concerns, including 13 structures over 180 acres of desert, safety shower and eyewash fixtures every 45 to 55 ft. Throughout facilities and continuous supply of tepid water on demand to more than 100 specified fixtures. Extreme conditions: Safety shower performance is affected by high-desert environments where temperatures range from sub-zero to above tepid water standards. Cost: The solution must provide an energyefficient and cost-effective solution without compromising worker safety. Solution With the help of Keltech’s engineers, Desler specified shower and eyewash fixtures paired with Keltech CLE (emergency eyewash) and SN (safety shower) heaters. Now, with 116 safety shower and emergency eyewash heaters, fixtures and integrated systems installed, employees have access to safety fixtures every 45 to 55 ft. In and around the 13 facilities. Keltech tankless water heaters Bradley’s Keltech tankless water heaters deliver instantaneous ANSI-required tepid water to emergency safety showers and eye/face washes. Drawing energy only when needed, Keltech water heaters are designed to be highly efficient and precise to supply immediate tepid water – even in the most extreme and challenging work environments. Installation of these units is very easy since only one electrical connection and a cold water line are needed, saving labor time and additional costs. Utility costs are minimized because there is no need to keep a 300-gal. Tank heated at all times. Plus, Keltech units are precision-engineered for long-lasting optimal performance. Results Desler and his manufacturing facilities met the OSHA standard with an ANSI-compliant tankless water heating solution, saving his company $349,000 annually in reduced energy costs. He explains: “We specified Keltech water heaters for many reasons,” including: Minimal cost to operate for the safety value provided; Price per unit; Delivery availability and flexibility; Cost-benefit analysis vs. a hot water loop system; Potential energy tax benefits; Customer service availability and support; and Engineering support during our plant design. “These were all value-added tasks that didn’t cost my company anything, but all-the-while provided a substantial element of efficiency, comfort and a well-thought-out plant-wide tepid water safety shower system.” Lee Brass’ LEE FREE lead-free case-solder fittings and flanges offer consistent solder-ability Some tradesmen have experienced difficulties in making a leak-proof joint with some of the lead-free alloy castsolder fittings and flanges. With LEE FREE®, you can use the longstanding industry-accepted Standard ASTM B 828-02 “Standard Practice for Making Joints by Soldering of Copper to Copper Alloy Tube and Fitting.” Competitive products may require extraordinary soldering techniques beyond acceptable industry practices. Also, extensive research shows that LEE FREE parts are “immune (not resistant) to dezincification.” According to independent research, any part that contains more than 85% copper and less than 15% zinc can be classified as immune to dezincification.* LEE FREE parts fall within those parameters. At Lee Brass we are committed to responding to our customers’ ever-changing needs and concerns. This year alone, our quality and efficiencies have further been enhanced with a multimillion-dollar investment in capital improvements, which includes a new state-ofthe art sand system and an additional automated molding center. We also have increased our workforce by more than 25%. This expanded workforce at Lee Brass is the result of everincreasing demand for our lead-free LEE FREE product line. Lee Brass has been a leader in manufacturing lead-free alloy products for more than 40 years. The new federal water safety regulation, known in the industry as NSF-61, requires less than 5 parts-per-billion for lead leaching for the “Health Effects of Safe Drinking Water.” It also addresses the lead content of potable water delivery system products as having a weighted lead content average of not more than 0.25%. There are many advantages offered by Lee Brass’ LEE FREE package: Manufactured in the USA Contains antimicrobial properties that may naturally kill bacteria. Not so with other materials such as stainless steel and PVC. LEE FREE offers the most extensive leadfree package of cast-solder and threaded-brass fittings and flanges with 745 line items. Elkay delivers high-quality, durable and stylish stainless-steel sinks Family-owned Elkay® Manufacturing Company has been providing innovative, high-quality plumbing products since 1920. From simple beginnings as a three-man shop on Chicago’s North Side to its present position as America’s No. 1 selling stainlesssteel sink company, Elkay remains focused on designing products and adapting the business to serve the changing needs of its customers. Elkay’s ongoing commitment to superior quality and craftsmanship means the company delivers durable products that will stand the test of time. This commitment to creating well-built, purposefully designed products is more critical than ever in light of recent developments, including the influx of substandard sinks being imported into the U.S. market. In March 2013, the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled that Chinese manufacturers were dumping drawn stainless-steel sinks into the U.S. marketplace and voted unanimously that unlawful pricing by Chinese producers caused material injury to Elkay and other domestic sink manufacturers. As a result of the ruling, some foreign imports have adjusted their base material and implemented the use of either thinner gauges of stainless steel or substandard stainless-steel formulation by using lower levels of the key elements – nickel and chromium. This combination of thinner material and low levels of nickel and chromium results in subpar sinks that provide minimal protection against denting, pitting and corrosion. In the U.S., the American Society for Testing and Materials has strict guidelines on how stainless steel is graded (A240/A240M-11a). Elkay only uses type 300 series stainless steel, specifically either type 304 or type 301. It is the ideal material in providing the user durability, superior appearance, corrosion resistance and value. The substandard imported sinks that were tested did not fit any known type class of stainless steel classified by ASTM. In addition, a test that exposed the sinks to bleach showed the material rapidly corroded when compared to Elkay’s type 304 and type 301 stainless steel. Elkay’s stainless steel won’t crack, chip or peel and ensures long-lasting durability. Also, Elkay’s quality stainlesssteel finishes provide superior protection against bacteria and are easy to clean and sanitize. Throughout Elkay’s more than 90 years in business, the company’s commitment to delivering only the highest quality products has never wavered. At Elkay, our word is our bond. Introducing the new 470 Series Freeze-Proof Hydrant Arrowhead Brass & Plumbing, the company that introduced the first springless check valve for its 420 Series hydrants and engineered the first truly self-draining vacuum breaker on the 480 Series, now introduces the new 470 Series. This new hydrant is the first frost-free hydrant that not only is frost-free but Freeze-Proof™. The Freeze-Proof Hydrant features include: Our highest-quality red-brass castings made with more than 82% copper content. U.S.-made copper tubing manufactured to stringent industry standards. The Arrowhead O-ring stem seal design that does away with troublesome packing nut leaks and never needs adjusting. The key to the 470 Series Freeze-Proof technology is a stem assembly that allows pressure to build within the valve that prevents the tube from bursting, which would lead to water and property damage inside the home. New shutoff design incorporates an O-ring to control the on/off function of the valve, eliminating the wear and tear of seat washers and the deterioration of standard brass seats. Includes Arrowhead’s QuickTurn® technology, easy on/off operation without letting go of the handle and Arrow-Breaker® integrated anti-siphon protection. How the new valve operates When a standard frost-free hydrant is exposed to freezing temperature, any water trapped in the valve will begin to freeze from the outside (the hose end) inward toward the pipe end or warm area where it is plumbed. As water freezes and expands, pressure inside the copper tube builds against the valve inlet and eventually the pressure exceeds the copper tube’s burst rating, causing a split that leads to flooding and water damage. In Arrowhead’s new 470 Freeze-Proof Hydrant, there is no valve seat to create the pressure buildup. The entire check is designed to expand within the brass fitting to create space for the water in the tube to completely freeze without causing any damage to the copper tube itself, thus preventing damage and flooding to the home all while keeping separation between the water supply and the possibly contaminated water outside the check valve. Arrowhead’s 470 hydrant is the only product on the market that can make this claim. As the valve thaws and is needed for use by the homeowner, by simply opening the handle, the water pressure in the home pushes the check back to the correct position and the valve functions in a normal manner. The valve shutoff is controlled by the handle hub that stops against the brass bonnet so the O-ring check returns to the exact position every time. Additionally, the 470 Series outperforms and comes standard with additional features that other hydrants do not provide, including high flow rates, integrated Arrow-Breaker backflow protection and QuickTurn operation combine in this revolutionary hydrant that costs less than other products in its category. The Arrowhead Brass & Plumbing 470 Series Freeze-Proof Hydrant is being used by professional contactors nationwide and is now available at wholesale distributors near you. Don’t be fooled: Yellow works and is safe There are many variations of the joke, but basically it goes like this: a guy in the middle of the street is wildly waving his arms and quacking like a duck. When asked why, he says he’s doing it to keep alligators away. “But there are no alligators here,” he’s told. The guy smiles and says “See? It’s working!” This is a little like what’s happening now in the gas pipe industry. Years ago, corrugated stainless-steel tubing was not widely adopted by the industry, but that has all changed as building codes evolved. CSST, like many of the home’s systems, must be grounded or bonded. This ensures safe installation of the gas piping. According to a leading manufacturer of gas piping, not one person has been injured or killed due to defects in CSST in the U.S. Not one. But you wouldn’t know this by reading some of the new gas pipe product ads. They talk up the dangers of CSST and imply that if you don’t cough up the extra money for their new black-coated piping, you’re putting everything at risk. Don’t buy into the fallacy that black is the new yellow. The yellow jacket is standard because it works. What happens if the more expensive product’s black coating gets damaged? If contractors think they don’t need to ground or bond the pipe and then the coating gets nicked or scraped during installation, they could put the entire system at risk. And when home repairs are made, if the pipe is black instead of industry-standard yellow, some might not realize it’s a gas line and further damage could result. Valencia Pipe Co. Scrupulously follows industry guidelines in manufacturing costeffective HOME-FLEX® CSST that addresses the safety concerns outlined by the gas piping industry. HOME-FLEX meets every applicable code and standard. It delivers the highest quality without the higher cost. With HOME-FLEX, you get a safe, reliable system manufactured to the most stringent standards – at a reasonable and competitive price. Valencia Pipe Co.’s HOME-FLEX CSST saves you time and money with easy and flexible installations or additions. It’s a complete system with fittings that are the industry’s easiest to assemble. No complicated series of discs, gaskets and O-rings – it’s just a brass retainer ring and a single nonmetallic gasket. HOMEFLEX includes everything you need to do a complete piping project in any building application, home or commercial. So don’t be fooled. Stick with industry standards and make it easy for yourself. Here’s another advantage of using Valencia Pipe’s HOME-FLEX: unlike some products, HOME-FLEX is readily available and easy to find. You can find it at select DIY home-improvement and construction warehouse locations across the country, as well as in plumbing and HVAC wholesale houses everywhere. As with any flexible gas pipe application, you need to be certified to install HOME-FLEX. Contact them for information about how to become a qualified installer. HOME-FLEX is available through Valencia Pipe Co. At www.valenciapipe.com or call them at 661/257-3923. Partners throughout the decades: Rheem and Southern Pipe & Supply Co. 2013 has been a banner year for Rheem® customer Southern Pipe & Supply Co. The company recently received the prestigious Supply House of the Year Award from Supply House Times, and this year also marks its 75th anniversary. Founded in 1938 and headquartered in Meridian, Miss., Southern Pipe & Supply is one of the largest privately held, independent wholesalers of plumbing, heating, air conditioning, industrial, mechanical, water and sewer supplies in the Southeast. Rheem has been partnering with Southern Pipe & Supply for more than 50 years. Today, the company stocks and sells Rheem residential and commercial tank and tankless water heating solutions, as well as a number of Rheem HVAC products. Southern Pipe & Supply distributes Rheem products at its 96 branch locations and at its central distribution center in Meridian. To help Southern Pipe & Supply mark a momentous year, Rheem joined in celebrating the company’s 75th anniversary. Rheem sponsored an employee picnic in May, which brought together more than 900 Southern Pipe & Supply family members. Rheem also co-sponsored open houses and cookouts at each of its branch locations in the U.S., and proudly attended the company’s 75th Vendor Appreciation Dinner. “Southern Pipe & Supply has a reputation as a longstanding partner for plumbing, HVAC and industrial suppliers in the Southeast thanks to its commitment to providing customers with the utmost in service. Rheem has been honored to work with the company for more than half a century,” says Gary DeArman, national accounts manager, Rheem Water Heating Division. “Our relationship has been based on a mutual trust throughout all levels of both companies, which makes supporting milestones, like the anniversary events, truly special.” Throughout the year, Southern Pipe & Supply has continued to leverage Rheem’s full breadth of efficient and advanced water heating and HVAC solutions. One Rheem water heater that has been a standout in 2013 is the Rheem SPIDERfire® ultra-high-efficiency condensing commercial water heater. The SPIDERfire family of 80- and 100- gal. Condensing commercial water heaters operates between 92% and 97% thermal efficiencies. SPIDERfire units feature a patented heat-exchange system: a series of connected, elongated tubes immersed in the water tank. A burner at the top of the unit generates combustion gases, which are then blown down a large main flue. The gases then traverse through the elongated tubes two more times, extracting as much heat energy as possible. “The SPIDER fire units are perfect for businesses that need an efficient solution for demanding daily hot water needs,” DeArman adds. “Southern Pipe & Supply has found the line to be popular with customers because of its efficient nature, and also because these units have features designed to simplify installations.” Since SPIDER fire delivers more heat to the water, less heat goes up the vent. The cooler flue gases permit venting through low-cost, 2-, 3- or 4-in. Plastic piping, which speeds up installation time. In addition, SPIDERfire’s factory-installed exhaust riser conveniently vents at the top of the unit so customers don’t have to spend time constructing a bulky side riser. For more information on the Rheem SPIDERfire condensing commercial water heater, please see www.Rheem.com/SPIDERfire. To learn more about Southern Pipe & Supply, please visit www.SouthernPipe.com. Kissler & Co.: Paving the future with cement from the past Your last name is powerful. More than just a suffix that appears after your first name, it acts as an umbrella that connects your family to all those who have come before you and all who will come long after you are gone. At Kissler & Co., our last name means everything to us. As we celebrate our 90th anniversary this year, we are tempted to look not only where our name has taken us in the past, but where it will be taking us in the future. After the third generation of Kisslers instilled the same qualities and values into the business as those who came before them, it’s the fourth generation that may be the most important one of all. Barry and Glenn Kissler are pleased their sons have joined the company and look forward to continued success and growth of the business. “A family company making it to the fourth generation is extremely rare. To be a part of a company that’s made it this long is very special” says Jeff Kissler, a graduate of Ithaca College. “Our customers always tell me stories about one of the generations before me and I’m always interested to hear what they have to say. It makes it seem like Kissler & Co. Is the oldest living member of my family.” Perhaps one of the toughest challenges the fourth generation of Kisslers face is growing the company within a rapidly evolving marketplace, one where technology and connectivity set the bar for how successful a business can be. Matthew Kissler, a graduate of Syracuse University, believes Kissler and Co. Will have no problem keeping up. “Kissler & Co. Will continue to adapt to the fast-changing world that we live in to ensure our customers continue to get the best plumbing products possible,” he says. One example of how the company plans to keep up is the creation of the new Kissler & Co. App, available in the fourth quarter of 2013.The app conveniently allows users to take a picture of any plumbing repair part and automatically have it emailed to Kissler & Co. For identification. It’s just one more way the business is connecting with its customers in smart and useful ways. “The app is important because it shows that we are becoming a more innovative company,” Jeff Kissler says. “Our Facebook page also offers customers more ways to connect with us.” It isn’t just about new ideas for the two future business owners, however. It’s also about learning from those who came before them. “A company cannot last 90-plus years without high moral standards and a strong work ethic,” Matthew Kissler says. “The culture of this company has instilled a sense of loyalty, honor and respect that I try to display throughout all parts of my life.” Kissler & Co. Is thrilled to celebrate its 90th year in business, but is even more excited about the next 90 years to come. For more information visit www.kissler. com or call 800/KISSLER (547-7537). Plumbing pro solves big problem and wins a big customer Serious kitchen drain stoppages at Southwest Medical Center menaced operations and sanitation. Worse, a parade of plumbers couldn’t cure the chronic quandary. Enter Linn’s Plumbing of Chandler, Okla. With a statewide reputation for outstanding service and professionalism, owner Larry Linn teamed trusted drain cleaners from General Pipe Cleaners to spot – and solve – the true trouble. Using one of his Gen-Eye™ video pipe inspection systems, he first pinpointed the problem, a broken cast-iron pipe. “Six other competitors just snaked debris around, never fixing the underlying mess,” he says. Then Linn cleared the line with a Speedrooter 92®. “Teaming the two tools confirmed our thoroughness and professionalism,” he says with a smile. “The construction supervisor was amazed at how quickly and cleanly we got that drain flowing!” The camera system for quick problem spotting Linn then burned a DVD of the collapsed line with his built-in Gen-Eye DVD recorder. That convinced Southwest Medical to replace and not just repair the kitchen conduit. Best of all, Linn’s experience and General equipment efficiency let him substantially underbid all his competitors by about half in one case. Gen-Eye systems offer plumbing and drain-cleaning professionals everything necessary to troubleshoot 2 in. To 10 in. Lines, including: On-screen distance counter Date and time stamp Voiceover unit Built-in titler AC/DC power option Easy-to-use digital locator Self-leveling color cameras automatically keep the picture upright, letting customers clearly follow the action. Gel-Rod® push rod protects wiring from cuts and abrasions. Recording options include DVD, SD card or USB connection. And the new easy-to-learn Hot-Spot™ pipe locator offers quick, accurate camera location in a rugged package – the industry’s highest-rated for durability. Drain-cleaning power completes equipment mix Great for long and tough jobs, the Speedrooter® blends rugged reliability with optimal control and ease-of-use. “We have six for our four crews,” Linn says. “It’s great for one-man use.” The field-proven machine features a braced frame at key stress points, drum design for longer bearing wear and Flexicore® cable – the industry standard for toughness. Heavy duty Flexicore cable blends superior strength and kinking resistance with just the right flexibility. It carries the best warranty in the business – one-year protection against breakage. In clearing the hospital drain, Linn’s Speedrooter retrieved a broken cable with cutter head from a competitor who irresponsibly left it there. “That made blockages even worse,” Linn dryly notes. Linn also likes General’s closed-drum design for medical and dental facilities. “Cleanliness is critical to those customers and to our reputation,” he says. Permanent General solution Linn’s arsenal includes several Mini-Rooter® and hand-held Power-Vee® drain cleaners, for small jobs and tight, awkward spots such as sinks, showers and laundries. Linn’s teamed its General equipment to bring Southwest Medical Center’s drain job to a swift and successful conclusion. Linn’s promised completion in five days, but completed the job in three. That was three years ago. Linn’s hasn’t needed to return for repair or maintenance of that line. “That’s how we got the maintenance contract worth several thousand dollars a month from Southwest Medical,” Linn says. “A big chunk of the credit goes to our General equipment!” To learn more about what General Pipe Cleaners can do for your business, contact the Drain Brains® at 800/245-6200 or visit www.drainbrain.com.
