Chapter 12 Looks Back on 2013 The joint events connect neighboring chapters and help members keep up to date with fellow AFE members. AFE Chapter 12, whose members are based throughout southeast Wisconsin, is comprised of local plant engineers and the vendors that support them. One hundred members strong, it is one of the largest AFE chapters in the country. Approximately one-third of the members are facilities engineers, and the rest are from support industries. Each January, Chapter 12 hosts an award gala to honor those members who have given to the organization and the community. Among the awards presented each year are: Project of the Year: This award goes to a project team to celebrate the teams exceptional vision and accomplishment. The judges typically have many projects to choose from, and the winner receives a prestigious plaque to remember their award. Engineer of the Year: This award is given to a facilities engineer who demonstrates commitment to the highest standards of excellence for AFE and the profession. President's Award: This is given as a way to recognize those AFE members who have given a high level of service to Chapter 12. In 2011, Roy Nation, current national industry director on AFE's board of directors, was the 34th recipient of this award for his work as president of Chapter 12 in 2000. Fundraising for scholarship money Chapter 12's annual golf outing (pictured on the left) is an opportunity to fill the coffers of the chapters scholarship fund for worthy students in a relaxed environment where members can socialize for charity. Chapter 12 has given out scholarships for the last 20 years. The funding comes from the golf outing as well as from vendor sponsors. This year, Chapter 12 awarded four scholarships totaling $3,500 to worthy students. The University of Wisconsin-Stout has an AFE student chapter—Chapter 195—and its members regularly receive these scholarships. Chapter 12 on the water One of Chapter 12's most popular events has turned out to be the annual Charter fishing outing on Lake Michigan. Chapter 12 has combined this with its membership drive to drum up interest from new members. This year the chapter had 12 boats with six fishermen in each. Chapter 12 required each boat to have at least one member to offer the chapter a chance to lobby the participants for membership. After an afternoon on the water, participants joined some of the chapter's land-lubber members for dinner and stories of the one that got away. Region 3 Vice-President Gerry Olsen, a frequent participant in Chapter 12's events, has offered the chapter the opportunity to keep up with national AFE news while attending fishing or golfing events. Other events have included: joint events with Chicago Chapter 1 (racing at the Union Grove Race Track near Racine, Wisconsin) and with Madison Chapter 161 (touring Trek Bicycle's facility in Water Town, Wisconsin). The joint events connect neighboring chapters and help members keep up to date with fellow AFE members. Joseph Schuller is a past president of Chapter 12. In addition to serving as president in 2012, Schuller has also served on AFE's regional board of directors since 2009 and is currently its chair of membership. AFE Chapter 12 is comprised of local plant engineers and the vendors that support them. One hundred members strong, it is one of the largest AFE chapters in the country.
