ASA moves into 2014 coming off a year that was one of its strongest ever. ASA reached net membership growth for the second consecutive year in 2013, a milestone that hadn’t previously been reached in decades. From a completed roll out of ASA University with the introduction of the College of Business Management to the debut of several new courses, the ASA Education Foundation is even better positioned in 2014 to help companies become more efficient, more productive and more profitable. Also introduced this past year was the new ASAU online store, an easy-to-use portal to all ASA University courses and training tracks, available at www.asa.net/store. Throughout 2013, ASA Executive Vice President Mike Adelizzi and staff once again made a tremendous effort to personally get out and meet with many members and prospects to discuss new developments at ASA. “Printed material, articles and advertisements do not substitute for the fact this is a face-to-face, relationship-based industry,” Adelizzi stated. “Although ASA’s membership growth over the last two years is far beyond anything that any of us would have imagined, we have only just begun. 2014 promises to be an even more involved travel year for us.” Throughout the past year, Dan Hilton, ASA’s director of government affairs and our “man in Washington,” has kept ASA members informed of pending industry related legislation through regular visits to Capitol Hill. Dan also organized “Hill visits” for ASA members during NetworkASA 2013 in Washington, D.C., in early October. ASA also worked hard throughout 2013 in the development of its already thriving forecasting program. Members have greatly benefitted by receiving the monthly ASA Advisor to provide clarity as to what is happening in the PVF and PHCP markets. ASA continues to be driven by strategic governance and long-range planning, which has been instrumental in delivering the many new programs that have led to the association’s resurgence. And after several years of streamlining operating costs and expanding revenues, a financially healthy ASA has emerged as quite capable of delivering these programs and with an enhanced ability to lead the industry. As 2014 will undoubtedly be a very interesting and challenging year, ASA will be at the forefront of helping its members succeed. 2014 ASA Calendar of Events >> March 9-12, 2014 University of Industrial Distribution Location: JW Marriott Indianapolis Indianapolis, Ind. www.univid.org >> April 9-10, 2014 ASA Legislative Fly-In Location: Grand Hyatt Washington Washington, D.C. www.asa.net >> April 23-24, 2014 ASA Women in Industry (WIN) Forum Location: Sheraton Chicago Chicago, Ill. www.asa.net >> May 1-4, 2014 PSDA Annual Convention Location: Indian Wells, Calif. www.thepsda.info >> May 19-20, 2014 ASA Young Executives Spring Forum Location: Hotel InterContinental Milwaukee Milwaukee, Wis. www.asa.net >> May 20, 2014 IPD Executive Council Meeting Location: The Westin Galleria Houston, Texas www.asa.net >> June 3-4, 2014 NCWA Annual Convention Location: Sheraton Suites Hotel Akron/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio www.northcentralwholesalers.org >> June 11-13, 2014 WANE Executive Leadership Conference Location: Hyatt Regency Cambridge Boston, Mass. www.wane5.org >> June 22-24, 2014 SWA Annual Convention Location: Hammock Beach Resort, Palm Coast, Fla. www.southernwholesalers.org >> Sept. 9-12, 2014 NetworkASA 2014 Location: Bellagio Las Vegas, Nev. www.asa.net >> Sept. 24-26, 2014 WSA Annual Meeting Location: Oceano Hotel & Spa Half Moon Bay, Calif. www.westernsuppliersassociation.com >> Nov. 3, 2014 MwDA Annual Meeting & Fall Industry Dinner Location: Ditka’s Restaurant Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. www.mwda.net Event dates and locations subject to change. Legendary Coach, FOX NFL Sunday’s Johnson Confirmed for NetworkASA 2014 Coming off a very successful NetworkASA 2013 – One Industry, One Voice, One Future in Washington, D.C., this past October, ASA has already started planning for the 2014 event to be held at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Sept. 9-11. ASA has confirmed two-time Super Bowl-champion NFL coach, NCAA national championship-winning coach and current “Fox NFL Sunday” studio analyst Jimmy Johnson as a speaker for the A.O. Smith Future Trends Luncheon. A full NetworkASA 2014 program brochure is in the works, so watch your mail and www.asa.net for more details in the coming weeks. ASA Readies for 2014 Election Cycle This year is poised to be another bruising battle for control of the House and Senate. Historically, the president’s party loses seats in midterm elections. Unless something drastic occurs, that is likely to be the case once again. For almost 30 years, we’ve been hoping for a reform of the tax code and for the better part of the last seven, LIFO users have helped beat back the possibility of repeal. 2014 may be the biggest fight we’ll ever see on this front. With two departing committee chairmen, all signs are pointing toward a tax overhaul. We expect a release of draft legislation early in the first quarter. The scrapping of tax provisions that many ASA members have benefited from could become a reality in exchange for lower marginal rates. Your elected officials must hear from you and ASA is your vehicle to make that happen. When members of Congress are at home, we strongly encourage you to invite them to your facility and lay out how LIFO repeal would impact the four walls they’re standing in. Our Legislative Fly-In this April in Washington, D.C., will provide members with an entire day’s worth of visits with those who represent not just your headquarters locations, but your branches as well. And finally, ASA PAC continues to be one of our most successful sources of influence. ASA PAC is the American Supply Association’s Political Action Committee. It is the PHCP/PVF industry’s voice in the political process and is your pipeline to the elected officials that impact your company. ASA PAC is the only political action committee that works solely to elect pro-PVF and PHCP candidates to the House of Representatives and Senate. Through voluntary contributions from eligible executive and management employees of ASA member companies, ASA PAC supports candidates for Congress who are sympathetic to your concerns. Be on the lookout for ASA PAC’s new brochure in early 2014, as well as more April Legislative Fly-In details and more on how you can help your industry!
