BUSINESS NEWS | COMING EVENTS | PEOPLE NEWS | MERGERS AME LAUNCHES ADOPT-ASCHOOL INITIATIVE ROLLING MEADOWS, IL—The Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) has revealedits new educational initiative, designed to provide high school and college students with access to valuable educational resources and constructive hands-on learning experiences. The AME Adopta- School Program connects students and their schools with manufacturers in their area to give them an in-depth look at the world of manufacturing. Manufacturers that join the program have the opportunity to give back to their community while helping local students expand their horizons.Manufacturers can participate in activities such as hosting students on tours of their facilities, visit schools to give talks offering insight into their industry, mentor interested students and promote valuable internships. Schools in the program provide their students an insightful look at careers in growing manufacturing industries across the country and offer them exciting learning opportunities outside the traditional brick and mortar walls.A number of high schools have already joined the program, including Lafayette High School in Virginia, Wheeling High School in Illinois and Portland Arts & Technology High School in Maine. A full list of schools onboard with the program is available on AME’s Adopt-a-School website. MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY ORDERS RISE IN MARCH MCLEAN, VA—March U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $492.78 million according to The Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT). This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTO program, was up 38.5%from February and up 2. 9%when compared with the total of $479.04 million reported for March 2013. With a year-to-date total of $1,228.60 million, 2014 is up 0.9% compared with 2013. These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals of actual data reported by companies participating in the USMTO program. “As these figures indicate, along with strong readings for the PMI, durable goods orders and motor vehicle sales, manufacturing continues to be a leader in economic growth,” said Douglas K. Woods, AMT president. “It’s noteworthy that this was the strongest month for orders since September 2012, an IMTS month, though order delays caused by a harsh winter certainly interrupted the flow of business at the start of the year. As we head toward IMTS 2014, we expect continued expansion through the rest of this year and likely into 2015.” The United States Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) report, compiled by the trade association representing the production and distribution of manufacturing technology, provides regional and national U.S. orders data of domestic and imported machine tools and related equipment.Analysis of manufacturing technology orders provides a reliable leading economic indicator as manufacturing industries invest in capital metalworking equipment to increase capacity and improve productivity. ASSOCIATION NEWS THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY (NIST, Gaithersburg, MD) has awarded 19 advanced manufacturing technology planning grants totaling $9 million to new or existing industry-driven consortia to develop technology roadmaps aimed at strengthening U. S. manufacturing and innovation performance across industries. The grants, awarded to universities and other non-profit organizations, are the first conferred by NIST’s new Advanced Manufacturing Technology Consortia (AMTech) Program. They range from $378,900 to $540,000 for a period of up to two years. The funded projects will identify and rank research and development goals, define workforce needs and initiate other steps toward speeding technology development and transfer, as well as improving manufacturing capabilities.Project collaborations span a wide variety of industries and technologies, from flexible-electronics manufacturing to biomanufacturing and from pulp-and-paper manufacturing to forming and joining technologies. ELEMENT MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) laboratory in Daleville, IN, has significantly expanded the scope of its Nadcap accreditation. This follows a year-long investment program in Element Daleville’s aluminum testing capabilities for the aerospace sector, which has been led by the specific needs of a key client. Achieving the best possible result of zero findings, Element Daleville now boasts Nadcap accredited services such as stress corrosion cracking, R curve/Kapp panel fracture, exfoliation, and compressive yield testing. These add to an impressive existing roster of certified services, including high cycle fatigue testing, fracture toughness, as well as routine mechanical, metallurgical, chemical and failure analysis. “Required by Element’s leading Prime partners such as Boeing, Airbus, Rolls Royce, and General Electric, a Nadcap accreditation is widely recognized as the most stringent within the Aerospace industry,” said Rick Sluiters, Element’s EVP of aerospace and defense. “It is notoriously difficult to not only acquire but to retain, so to achieve zero findings for an expanded scope took a monumental effort by the team.” Over the last year, Element has invested substantially in Daleville’s aluminum center of excellence, adding a dedicated team of 10 technicians and machinists and supporting its development of proprietary, innovative aluminum testing processes with the expertise of the Group’s entire global platform. This expansion has been focused around the specific needs of a global fabricator of aluminum components for aerospace manufacturers and this Nadcap accreditation represents the culmination of Daleville’s work alongside this key client in developing its offering. A new study from FROST & SULLIVAN (Mountain View, CA), Analysis of the Global Measurement Gages Market, found the market earned revenues of $178.8 million in 2013, and estimates revenue to reach $201.8 million in 2017. The analysis covered height gages, depth gages, plug-and-bore gages and ring gages. “Although established participants dominate the market, there are several Chinese measurement gages manufacturers that have made inroads into the APAC market with their low cost products,” said Aravind Govindan, Frost & Sullivan test and measurement senior research analyst. “Research indicates that a lack of marketing capabilities similar to some of their larger counterparts is likely to restrict the growth and business potential of some of the smaller participants.” Brand visibility is evaluated as a key competitive criterion, which has led to a greater focus on this by market participants through the use of online channels and eCommerce websites as retailing points for measurement gages. Analysis of the Global Measurement Gages Market is part of the Test and Measurement Partnership Services program, which provides global Mega Trends: information on emerging markets, the latest technology innovations and market, economic, customer, competitive and best practices research.
