Several years ago, David Hickman, president & CEO, and Walter Jann, executive vice president, recognized an opportunity to fulfill the growing hydronic market utilizing the Legend Valve & Fitting guaranteed performance and services. Legend meets the demand for radiant, solar and geothermal systems with a comprehensive offering of high-quality, high-performing and featurerich products. This includes the most expansive offering of hydronic manifolds, QuickTherm™ and VersaTherm™ radiant floor systems, Legend Flex™ heating tube, and mechanical room components such as the HS-808 Hydraulic Separator and T-88 Air and Dirt Eliminator. In 2011 Legend moved to its Auburn Hills, Mich., corporate facility that includes an expanded fully functional laboratory, and a large training facility for classroom and handson representative, wholesaler and contractor hydronic systems training. Shortly following the move, Legend Valve & Fitting initiated its contractor training classes that are within the Legend University program. In 2014 Legend added four contractor classes and will announce the 2015 schedule just prior to the AHR Expo this month. The training program includes hydronic industry design concepts and common practices to assist contractors and wholesaler heating experts in advancing his or her knowledge, as well as becoming more familiar with Legend products. Hydronic design is integrated throughout the training, culminating with a classroom Legend LoopCAD™ session. Legend University is led by very experienced plumbing and heating professionals. Bill Melvin, manager of Legend’s Engineering and Technical Services Department, joined Legend in 2005 to develop and oversee the Technical Department. In 2008 he initiated Legend Hydronics based on more than 20 years’ experience in the HVAC industry with 16 years focused on design and analysis of Hydronics systems that include radiant heating and cooling, plumbing and fire protection. He holds a mechanical engineering degree from Virginia Military Institute, is an RPA-certified designer/ installer, past chair of the ASHRAE Technical Committee (T.C. 6.5 - Radiant Heating and Cooling) and member of ASSE International serving on working groups 1019, 1061 and 1081. Throughout these years Werthman has been an advocate for training, participating in license certification classes for the state of Michigan, and in recent years has been a regular trainer at PHCC national and regional events. Werthman’s technical and practical experience is ideal for his role as the primary instructor for Legend University and the Legend LoopCAD software. Curt Martin has more than 20 years’ experience in snow-melt and radiant design for a boiler manufacturer and manufacturers representative firm before joining Legend last year.
