Everyone knows that measurement by comparison results are as good as the calibration process. But time is money, and setting the instruments should not mean extensive downtime. Between out-sourcing the calibration of the instruments (which can be very costly) and using gage blocks (which can be lengthy and challenging (math involved; possible foreign materials like dirt or coolant...), another avenue is presented to customers: set the instruments in house ! Indeed, companies have now the opportunity to set or calibrate their own instruments on site with a great accuracy and repeatability, in the quality lab or on the production floor. Setting benches, such as the Vector from Easy-METRIC, are user friendly, very accurate and highly repeatable. The Vector’s construction make it very durable, thanks to its granite base and stainless steel mobile components. The air bearing system makes it very easy to handle and provides a great precision. Finally and maybe most importantly, it also reduces the setting process to a minimum of steps: • First, make sure to prepare your instrument close to the final desired dimension so it doesn’t need much Adjustment on the setting bench. • On the setting bench, check if the contact blocks are clean from any unwanted particles (dirt, oil...) • Zero the bench before starting the setting by getting both blocks in contact. It can be set either for an inner diameter or an outer diameter. • Move the mobile turret to the desired dimension measurement. The dimension can be read on the DRO’s screen, in inch or mm. • Immobilize the mobile turret, using the brake system. This will lock the bench in position while calibrating the instrument. Adjust with the fine adjustment screw for a very specific measurement. • Place the instrument on the bench support blocks. Some operations may require the use of specific calibration kits which will assist the setting of the gages. It is always recommended to set the gages the same way they will be used. An array of adaptors are available for virtually any type of instruments. For very specific gages, some kit can easily be designed. • Set the indicator to zero or the pre-selected data. The setting time is about 5 to 10 minutes depending on The type of gages and their sizes. Easy-METRIC Vector bench can also be used to set your transfer masters or Easy-METRIC’s Carbon Factory Masters. Finally, the calibration of the setting bench is usually performed annually, therefore reducing the overall calibration cost. Overall, this method of instrument setting will save time and money, and reduce human errors, while offering internal trace ability.
