PORTABLE LASER SCANNER Hexagon Metrology announced the release of the RS3 upgrade package delivering a dramatic performance improvement for the ROMER Absolute Arm with integrated laser scanner. The RS3 doubles the scan rate of the previous RS2 integrated scanner, enabling users to inspect parts in approximately half the time. The laser scanner will be available with all newly purchased ROMER Absolute Arm SI portable measurement systems or as an upgrade option for existing customers. The RS3 integrated scanner also delivers greater point cloud density with a maximum acquisition speed more than 9 times faster than its predecessor, resulting in more detailed scanning without compromising accuracy. Users will benefit from the latest RDS proprietary software featuring SMART technology that monitors the arm in real-time and reduces the mean time to repair. The ROMER Absolute Arm with integrated scanner combines non-contact scanning and tactile probing into a multipurpose portable measurement system. The versatile solution is suitable for point cloud inspection, product benchmarking, reverse engineering, rapid prototyping, virtual assembly and CNC milling applications. Scanner and probe measurements can be made seamlessly in one software session. The new RS3 scanner maintains the quality and ease of use customers have come to expect since the launch of the ROMER Absolute Arm in 2010. As of April 20, 2015, all ROMER Absolute Arms with integrated scanner will come standard with the RS3 laser scanner. The new high-resolution scanner is the first important upgrade of the Spider scanner, named best hardware at this year’s Solidworks World, since its launch in 2013. Space Spider was inspired by the space industry; it is equipped with an enhanced cooling system that allows it to operate at a constant temperature throughout the entire scanning process, guaranteeing maximum accuracy and a better user experience. The Space Spider’s advanced cooling system keeps it from becoming overheated, a common problem for electronics in space stations, but also on Earth, especially in hot geographic areas, industrial laboratories, and other places with important variations in temperature. The heat buildup can cause a number of operating problems and safety concerns. However, Artec 3D’s Space Spider design resolves this problem, eliminating the need for human intervention to prevent overheating. Using blue LED lights, the Space Spider can precisely scan a variety of objects of all sizes, even those with sharp edges, moving parts or textured surfaces, in high resolution. It captures objects with an accuracy of up to 50 microns and resolution of up to 100 microns, making it ideal for CAD as well as reverse engineering and additive manufacturing. The scanner is delivered ready to use and requires no recalibration. INTUO simplifies and automates the gauging of a wide variety of parts, removing dependence on the skill of manual gauge users. Reducing gauging inconsistency reduces scrap, whilst ensuring parts that are out of tolerance are always identified. Renishaw is also launching the Equator Button Interface (EBI), with simple push-button controls for shopfloor operators, removing the need for a mouse and keyboard. INTUO with Equator is an ideal alternative to multiple manual devices such as vernier or digital callipers, micrometres and plug gauges. Equator is highly repeatable and runs fast automated routines, meaning significantly reduced labor costs. With many workshops using hundreds of manual gauges this cost saving can be considerable. INTUO, with minimal training, uses intelligent functions to help the engineer set up gauging of parts in a matter of minutes. Shop-floor operators then select and run those programs using the user-friendly Renishaw Organizer front-end software. INTUO allows the programmer to create gauging routines using just a part with an engineering drawing. With the Feature Predict function activated, the programmer uses the joystick to take points on each feature while INTUO does most of the work, by predicting the type of feature, the nominal value and a possible tolerance band. It is then easy to adjust the program to change the number of points taken or to space them evenly, and match nominals and tolerances to the engineering drawing. It is a simple task to input the actual values for features on the master part, which does not need to be a ‘perfect part’. In fact it is preferable that a production part manufactured with the same method and material is used. First the features required are measured on a certified device, like a calibrated manual gauge or any co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM). The values from this master part inspection report can be manually added to a table in Organizer or to the corresponding field in INTUO – changing one will update the other. This compact 19” half-rack single-phase AC source outputs up to 300 VA and measures AC power characteristics. Users can operate the AC source in a 0-300 V continuous sweep range or 150 V/300 V auto-switching range with adjustable start and stop phase angle control. With a built-in power line disturbance (PLD) simulator, list, sweep, and dimmer mode, the 9801 is suitable for simulating various AC power conditions and provides a complete solution for manufacturing, R&D, and pre-compliance testing applications. WWW.MAHR.COM MEASURING STATION Mahr has introduced a new high-precision measuring station to measure and evaluate optical components, including freeform, aspheric, and spherical lenses. Developed to provide quick 2-D and 3-D testing to support the entire lens production process, the MarForm MFU 200 Aspheric 3D is CNC operated with nine motorized axes, including four measuring axes, and delivers the highest measuring speed available and ultra-precise path control. The system includes both an interferometric point sensor for fully non-contact measurements, and a tactile probing system for surfaces in early stages of production that do not allow the interferometer to interact well with the rough surface. The high precision MarForm MFU 200 Aspheric 3D ensures very low measurement uncertainties while quickly measuring the complete topography of optical components. For the complete 3-D measurement of a lens, one or more linear profiles are measured over the zenith of the lens, then several concentric circular profiles at different radii are recorded by turning the C-axis. All of these measuring points are combined to create the 3-D topography. Interrupted surfaces can also be measured easily with the MFU 200 since the probe can automatically move over the interruption. The system includes built-in vibration isolation and a full machine enclosure to ensure minimal effects from the external environment. When measuring aspheric lenses the measuring data is recorded and compared to the nominal data of the lens, and the RMS value, PV value, and slope error are all reported. Individual parameters for the asphere, such as degree of curvature R0, conic constant k, and aspheric coefficients Ai can be adjusted to the measuring results to determine sources of error, or held fixed to determine total error as compared to the nominal lens design data. The differential topography between the recorded measuring values and the nominal lens definition is depicted as a color-coded height image for an easy-tounderstand graphical representation of the measured errors. Several popular brands of processing machines can be used directly with the MFU 200 to provide closed loop control of lens grinding and polishing processes. The ability to exchange data is included as part of the standard software of the MFU 200. This includes the ability to get the desired nominal profile directly from the machining center and return the error map resulting from the MFU 200 measurement to the machining center. When used in this manner, the MFU 200 can help the machining centers reduce the overall processing time required for each operation resulting in significant time and cost reductions. Freeform, and even unknown form, optics can also be easily measured by the MFU 200 since it can be used in a measuring mode where it will track the contour of the freeform surface and allow for the measurement of surfaces with large departures from a spherical or aspherical shape.
