But New York City plumbing pro Sylvan Tieger discovered more serious trouble – total stoppage in a 4-in. Stack. “The 4-in. Soil line was blocked below the church’s kitchen sink on the main floor,” he recalls. “So the sink was receiving discharges from five floors above.” That allowed waste to fill the sink every time a fixture above was used. “It looked like a soft stoppage and a cable machine probably wouldn’t have worked,” Tieger adds. “That’s when I decided to test the power of my Kinetic Water Ram.” Powerful tool clears tough “FOG” clogs The lightweight compact Kinetic Water Ram™ from General Pipe Cleaners safely, quickly and cleanly clears clogged sinks and showers, toilets and tubs with Kinetic Energy. Kinetic Water Ram unleashes a powerful burst of compressed air that drives a clog-busting shock wave through water at 4,700 ft./second. It effectively clears hair, rust, grease, sediment and scale from lines from 1 1/4 in. To 4 in. Diameter. “This was a bad blockage,” Tieger notes. “And it frankly took me a coupledozen times before I finally heard the ‘whoosh’ that – believe it or not – cleared the entire 4-in. Stack stoppage!” Results like that made him a believer. “This one job paid more than the tool cost me,” he reveals. “Now I have one Kinetic Water Ram for each of my three crews, my home and my daughter!” he laughs. “On ‘FOG’ – fats, oil and grease – it’s my favorite tool!” Versatile and easy to use General’s pioneering product is especially effective clearing slow-draining tubs when the stoppage is on the far side of a drum trap – or through narrow lines in trailer homes that can be hard on a snake. “I use it for all my tub stoppages,” he adds, “plus on all sorts of sinks, basins, and floor and roof drains.” The compact, hand-held tool is easy to transport and use. It weighs just 10 lb. Simply pump the Kinetic Water Ram to the desired pressure, firmly position the flexible cone over the drain opening and snap the trigger. A powerful shock wave is unleashed, clearing most clogs with amazing speed. There’s no pressure buildup within the system, either. The shock wave bypasses stacks and vents — 98% of the force is directed down the line and only 2% against pipe walls. The Kinetic Water Ram comes standard with a 4-in. Flexible cone, caulking hose and five tapered rubber plugs for sealing openings from 1 1/4 in. Through 4 in. Diameter. A Schraeder valve is included for use with an external air compressor when clearing difficult blockages. An optional toilet attachment screws onto the front of the Kinetic Water Ram – permitting firmer positioning in the bowl to act like a powerful plunger. The Bottom line “I judge how good a tool is by how fast it pays for itself,” Tieger concludes. “With Kinetic Water Ram, General has one hell of a great product!” To see the Kinetic Water Ram in action visit drainbrain.com/ram or contact the Drain Brains at 800/245-6200 for more information. The AB&I Foundry way AB&I Foundry, located in Oakland, Calif., has led the West Coast as the largest producer of quality cast-iron soil pipe and fittings for more than a century. In the past decade, AB&I has successfully expanded across the nation. Strategically located regional distribution centers in Northern and Southern California, east Texas and the Mid-Atlantic has enabled rapid distribution of product to customers on a nationwide scale. American manufacturing American Brass and Iron (AB&I) Foundry was born out of founder Joseph Boscacci’s own backyard nearly a century ago where he initially manufactured cast-iron fittings, window sash weights and cast-iron stovetops. As decades unfolded and as the American industry grew, so did the need for cast-iron pipe and fittings for storm and sanitary drain, waste and vent (DWV) plumbing systems. Engineers and contractors are becoming more conscience about sustainability in their building designs. AB&I’s products are in line with the growing trend to “go green.” Its products are manufactured using 95% postconsumer recycled scrap metal. Cast iron also is 100% recyclable at the end of its service life. Additionally, a cast-iron system is the safest piping solution because it’s noncombustible, easy to firestop and durable, often outlasting the lifetime of a building. It also provides the best sound performance, making a cast-iron DWV system the ideal choice for condominiums, schools and hospitals where acoustic performance matters. Standards and compliance AB&I Foundry has been a member of the Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute (CISPI) since 1949. CISPI continues to improve the industry’s standardization while providing a continuous program of product testing, evaluation and development. All AB&I cast-iron pipe and fittings have been certified by NSF International to meet applicable ASTM and CISPI standards. As more products with questionable origin and compliance records enter the domestic marketplace, it is critical engineers, contractors and inspectors have the ability to distinguish between products that meet the standards and those that do not. A business based on relationships AB&I has solid corporate principles and believes it is important to find business partners who share its philosophy and values. AB&I strives to develop strong bonds with its customers. One way it accomplishes this is to invite customers to the foundry to see firsthand how cast-iron pipe and fittings are made. Integrity, responsibility and reliability – that’s the AB&I way. You can view the company’s manufacturing video by visiting GotIron.us, or visit abifoundry.com. The professional’s choice for water filtration for more than 80 years Since the 1930s, American Plumber has built a strong reputation for manufacturing high-quality waterfiltration products in its own factories in the U.S., and abroad. The company’s dedication to controlling product research and development, design and engineering ensures reliable, trusted water-filtration products are delivered to plumbing professionals around the world. American Plumber’s comprehensive product portfolio of filter housings, cartridges and systems offers solutions to a wide array of water-filtration challenges including lead. Recently, the water challenges in Flint, Mich., had a ripple effect in cities across the nation. Municipalities across the country began to issue statements about the presence of lead in their city’s drinking water. Most were attributed to aging, neglected infrastructures which would take billions of dollars and several years to replace. In the interim, city officials have recommended communities protect themselves and their families with point-of-use filtration systems. This opened up a new opportunity for plumbing professionals to provide educated recommendations to their clients about the potential dangers of lead contamination and what options are available to protect their families. Shelly Johnson, channel marketing manager for Pentair’s water-purification wholesale business, says, “Plumbing professionals and wholesalers are in a unique position to become trusted educators in their communities. The access the contractor has to the homeowner while providing in-home services presents an opportunity to educate them about the potential hazards of drinking-water contamination and offer sound, reliable solutions.” Johnson emphasizes American Plumber’s loyalty to its network of contractors through the plumbing wholesaler has allowed them (American Plumber) to position the plumber as a trusted ally to homeowners. “The average consumer doesn’t think to call a plumber for water filtration,” Johnson notes. “Instead, we think a plumber only is needed when something has gone wrong, such as a broken pipe or water heater, when in reality plumbing professionals can share a wealth of knowledge with the homeowner about the importance of protecting their drinking water with point-of-use systems.” It can be easy for a homeowner to become overwhelmed with the multitude of waterfiltration options available on the market. Johnson notes plumbing professionals should emphasize the importance of choosing a system that is tested and certified by an independent third-party such as the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF). According to its website, NSF is an organization whose mission it is to “…protect and improve global human health.” The NSF mark assures consumers the product they’ve purchased has been tested by one of the most respected independent certification organizations. American Plumber offers several NSF-certified systems to reduce lead and a long list of chemicals from drinking water. A few examples of such systems are its single-stage quick-change DW- 6000, the WLCS-1000 dual-stage filtration system and the WRO-2550 reverse osmosis system. Winters Tools-To-Go App In pursuit of the company’s goal of making it easy for people to get instrumentation, Winters Instruments has developed the Winters Tools-To-Go App. The Winters team worked with developers to create an app that combined the company’s most popular tools in a way that makes them more accessible. The most popular tool on the app is the Application and Product Configurator. Users looking for pressure gauges, thermometers or instrument valves can start their search by either selecting their application or product preference. Under “application,” there are many different applications to choose from including boilers, pumps and sprinklers. In the product section, users can configure pressure gauges, thermometers or instrument valves using a series of dropdown menus. The configurator then displays the product(s) that meet the user’s specifications. The more information entered into the configurator, the more precise the results. Information options include dial size, pressure range, wetted parts, etc. Once the users find the part they’re looking for, they can choose to view the specifications, email the information to someone or search for a local distributor where they can purchase the product. The specifications for a specific product also can be found by entering the part number or UPC into the configurator. Tools-To-Go also includes a UPC scanner that allows for the identification of Winters instrumentation. In order to make instrumentation more identifiable, Winters includes UPCs on product boxes and on the actual instrumentation. Scanning a UPC with the app will bring up a part number and specifications. If the label is damaged, the UPC also can be manually entered into the UPC scanner to retrieve the same information. The user can then research the information, email it or search for a distributor in the same way as with the configurator. The Competitor Crossover tool is useful for converting competitor instrumentation to the Winters equivalent. Pressure gauges, diaphragm seals, pressure transmitters and thermometers can be crossed over to the Winters equivalent by selecting the instrument, the competitor and the competitor series from three dropdown menus. The product can then be further configured in the Product Configurator to narrow down the series to a specific part number. The final two tools on the app are a Pressure/Temperature Converter and the Winters Catalogue. The Pressure/Temperature Converter quickly converts pressure into 13 different pressure scales or temperature between Fahrenheit and Celsius. The Winters Catalogue takes the user to the Catalogues & Brochures section of the Winters website for convenient access to all Winters product specifications. Winters continuously strives to make it easy for customers to get instrumentation. With the design of the Tools-To-Go App, Winters has worked to reduce the turnaround time from identifying instrumentation needs to receiving that instrumentation. INSULATOR/MS® from Milwaukee Valve is the insulating ball valve handle that does it all – controls condensation, provides a reliable memory stop and saves time since there’s no need to disassemble for adjustments. INSULATOR is a nonmetallic handle that provides a thermal barrier between the valve and the surrounding atmosphere. Every INSULATOR handle sold is mounted to a Milwaukee Valve 2-piece or 3-piece ball valve designed to accommodate the rigid operating conditions that require an INSULATOR handle. When used in systems that experience temperatures below room temperature, INSULATOR eliminates the opportunity for heat loss, which often results in condensation. Often added to ball valves in refrigerated or cooling systems, INSULATOR also can be used in applications such as cooling towers for server farms where the ambient temperature is in excess of 90° F. The operating range for this handle is anywhere from +15° to +250° F. INSULATOR’s key attribute limits the transfer of heat from lowertemperature piping systems to exposed-metal valve handles or to the surrounding air. By reducing heat loss, there is little or no condensation, preventing moisture from infiltrating insulated systems. Systems with uninsulated valve handles can promote condensation that saturates piping insulation or the area below the valve, resulting in mold and/or water damage. INSULATOR not only prevents condensation, it’s the market’s only insulating valve handle that saves maintenance time, too. Because of Milwaukee Valve’s unique memory-stop design, there is no need to disassemble the handle or the valve in order to make adjustments. The memory stop shows contractors or maintenance personnel the proper setting for the valve in a system. Once the stop is set, repairs or service can then be made to the valve or the system and the valve can easily be returned to its correct position. Insulated handles from other manufacturers require disassembly in order to make any adjustments. Some competitive products do not even offer a memory stop. INSULATOR’s memory stop can be adjusted without taking the handle apart, with a simple adjustment accessible from the top of the handle. Simply pop off the INSULATOR’s top, make any necessary adjustments with a hex wrench and pop the cover back into place. The INSULATOR/MS handle is available on the following Milwaukee Valve, Hammond Valve and UltraPure Lead-Free products with a size range of ¼” through 2”: Milwaukee Valve • BA-100/150 2-piece bronze ball valves – standard port • BA-300/350 3-piece bronze ball valves – full port • BA-400/450 2-piece bronze ball valves – full port • BA-475/485 2-piece forged-brass ball valves – full port • BA-480/490 2-piece forged-brass ball valves – full port • Hammond Valve • 8501/8511 2-piece bronze ball valves – standard port • 8604/8614 3-piece bronze ball valves – full port • 8301/8311 2-piece bronze ball valves – full port • 8901/8911 2-piece forged-brass ball valves – full port • BA-480B/490B 2-piece forged-brass ball valves – full port • UltraPure Lead-Free • UPBA-100/150 2-piece ball valves – standard port • UPBA-300/350 3-piece bronze ball valves – full port • UPBA-400/450 2-piece bronze ball valves – full port • UPBA-475/485 2-piece forged-brass ball valves – full port • UPBA-480/490 2-piece forged-brass ball valves – full port The UltraPress press-fit versions of each of these valves also are available with the INSULATOR handle.
