Plumbers, Reps And Wholesalers Enjoy Texas Fishing Tournament More than 75 plumbing contractors from the Houston area competed in the annual Houston Plumbers Fishing Tournament held in May on Lake Sam Rayburn. This is an invitation-only tournament that has been held every spring for the past 45 years. Manufacturers representatives and wholesalers from the Texas market served on the judging committee. Participants caught more than 600 pounds of crappie, with the largest one being 2.4 pounds, according to Ty Tipton, president of Houston-based manufacturers rep firm Tipton Co. The winning team from Cy Tech Services received a 7-foot tall trophy. A sportsmanship award was given in the name of the late Joe Crawford, former owner of McFadden and Associates Plumbing Co. OBITUARIES Melvin Weiner, 85, founder of Best Plumbing Supply, died June 5 in his sleep at his South Carolina home. After serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Pargo during World War II, he and his wife, Adele, founded Best Plumbing Supply in Mohegan Lake, NY, which just celebrated 50 years in business. He was an innovator in the plumbing showroom industry and an inspiration to all. When he retired in 1976, he and his wife bought a sailboat and cruised around the Bahamas for 12 years. They moved back to New York in 1988 to be closer to their sons and grandchildren. His sons, Jonas and Jess, and eldest granddaughter, Kymberly, carry on his legacy. Fred W. Taggart, 86, died June 11 at his home. He founded manufacturers rep firm The Taggart Co. In 1974, which merged with Knight Sales in 2003 to form Taggart-Knight Group LLC (Farmington Hills, MI). He attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy as a cadet midshipman and served in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II. He was a licensed plumber and a member of Plumbers Local 98 for 65 years. He began his career in sales in 1958 and was a member of numerous trade associations.
