Guardian Equipment For more than 40 years Guardian Equipment has manufactured the highest quality emergency eyewash and shower equipment in the marketplace, offering superior performance and reliability. The GBF2150 series of products, pioneered by Guardian more than 10 years ago, offer the same performance and reliability for which all Guardian products are known. GBF2150 series units are designed to provide clean, unobstructed work areas. They are ideal for laboratories, schools and other facilities where space is at a premium, but safety is a requirement. Shower and eyewash components are installed within a wall surface, without using up valuable floor space. GBF2150 series units incorporate a shower activated by a pull-down type “panic bar” and a swing-down style eyewash with a drainpan. Swinging the drainpan down from the vertical to horizontal position activates the water flow. In the “off ” position, the drainpan conceals and protects the eyewash. In the “on” position, the drainpan serves to collect the wastewater and funnel it into a reservoir where it will eventually exit the unit via a 2” female drain within the cabinet. All units are constructed of sturdy Type 304, 16-gauge stainless steel. Showers and eyewashes use U.S. made forged brass ball valves with chrome plated balls and Teflon© seals. All units are designed to meet ADA requirements for handicapped accessibility. The GBF2150 series units incorporate design features common to all Guardian eyewash and shower units. Most importantly, all Guardian eyewash and eye/facewashes utilize spray-type outlet heads. These spray heads deliver water in a soft, wide spray rather than a solid, narrow stream. The user receives more water with a gentler flow over a wider area of coverage than with any other type of outlet head. In an emergency, contaminants are rinsed away quickly, gently and completely. As the innovative leader in the industry, Guardian has created many permutations of the GBF2150 series for different situational needs: Daylight Drain: Rather than connecting to the building’s drainage system, units are available with a 1-1/2” OD drain connection on the front of the unit for waste water. A front drain provides for less costly installation while facilitating regular testing of the unit. Fire-Rated Construction: These stations can be used in 1-hour and 2-hour fire-rated walls without compromising the integrity of the walls. The unit features an endothermic ceramic fiber blanket around the cabinet and sealed with fire barrier caulk. It is also UL Listed as “Through-Penetration Firestop System No. W-L-7167.” Cleanroom Construction: Ideal for use in semiconductor, electronics and pharmaceutical applications, this unit is constructed in Type 304 or Type 316 stainless steel and meets cleanroom requirements. All seams in the cabinet are fully welded and polished and the unit is completely sealed and airtight with covers concealing all openings on the front of the unit. Safety Center Add-Ons: Units are also available with auxiliary “safety wall” add-on housings for storing fire extinguishers, fire blankets, first aid kits or any needed safety related products. The add-on housings match the finish and feel of the GBF2150 series of products. Specify Guardian, the leader in emergency eyewash and shower technology… Think Orange. Several recent changes I have seen in the market which YOW has been able to maximize relates to products that are focused on water conservation and those that make your home not only safe, but more accessible. The next YOW DoDads catalog will be putting a bigger emphasis on both of these areas. What do you see as the future of merchandising at YOW? In the future, YOW will expand into other product categories and will work very closely with our customers to ensure that we are providing the right products and services. Between 2009 and 2010, YOW has increased their selection significantly to provide their customers with a more dynamic product assortment to help grow their business. Do you see this trend slowing down? No, I don’t see this trend slowing down anytime soon. While 2009 may have been a year to catch up while the new merchant team was established, 2010 and beyond will be a time to further modify the stocking assortment and to explore adding new suppliers and product categories. Both the customers and the suppliers are working with YOW on an even more frequent basis initiating new relationships in the market. The result is driving more product availability via YOW due to its strong reputation for delivering a high quality of service. YOW strives for and has a track record of improving market share for both the customer and the supplier by developing joint strategies to grow the business. That focus will always be the basis of our continuing success as a master distributor. For more information , visit www.YourOtherWarehouse.com. Texas Pipe & Supply Over the last 5-8 years, a team of efficiency engineers, and customer service experts has worked 50- to 60-hour weeks to determine where “break-downs” existed in the Houston yard and shipping office, which caused customer trucks to sometimes wait longer than expected to get loaded. These teams found the areas, corrected the problems, implemented ideas and strategies to improve customer satisfaction, and now we brag that we have the quickest load times, the best paperwork and happiest truckerexperience in the industry. No one can load a truckload of pipe, fittings and flanges quicker and more efficiently than Texas Pipe. The BEST part of the whole change is your paperwork arrives to you before the truck even leaves our yard! That’s right, because our entire yard is wireless, when our loading crew completes the load and signs off their tickets for the driver to strap down, the paperwork is printed and emailed instantly! Additionally, with the new Web site, www.TEXASPIPE.com, a customer can go straight to the Internet to get their paperwork. IT JUST DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER. Global Stainless Supply In 2006 when Global Stainless Supply (GSS) acquired Forgings, Flanges and Fittings, Inc. (FFF) the combination revolutionized PVF master distribution. Never before had stainless products and carbon products been offered through one location. From the idea of minimizing transaction costs, the concept of a one-stop PVF master distributor was born. Fast forward four years, three new branch locations, over 2,000 new line items and more than $100 million in inventory to get to the next phase of GSS/FFF’s evolution – carbon pipe. With our $20 million initial investment from parent company Sumitomo Corp., we will make an immediate impact in the commodity seamless carbon pipe market . Current inventories consist of Eastern European material from Sisak (Croatia) and Niko Tube (Ukraine) in STD and XH through 24”. We’re in the process of converting the 14-acre lot across the street from our new Houston facility into a pipe yard where we will have room for expanding our inventories. Each new venture within our company will be set up as a separate division of GSS and each product division in our company has experienced product managers and designated sales people. Our carbon pipe division follows the same philosophy. It’s led by industry veterans Paul Brahier (formerly of Texas Pipe and Dixie Pipe) and Mike Chambers (of McJunkin fame) who have more than 60 years of combined carbon steel pipe experience. This concept of different divisions within the organization guarantees that you’re dealing with sales personnel who are knowledgeable about the product and its applications, aware of current market trends, and capable of answering complex questions. It’s the same reason you don’t get your knee scoped by a general practitioner. Future growth of the carbon pipe division will consist of adding heavy wall material through Schedule 160 and also developing a line of approved carbon steel seamless pipe. Beyond our Eastern European inventory we look to stock pipe from North, Central and South American mills. A joint venture between Sumitomo and Vallourec in Brazil is expected to be up and running by October, and will be instrumental in growing our carbon pipe inventory. Made By Viega In America Technology has brought the world closer together, making it possible to communicate with another person on the other side of the globe almost instantaneously through e-mail or video chat. However, though communicating over great distances has become easy, importing manufactured goods across those same distances still takes time and money. To cut costs and increase product availability, Viega decided to begin manufacturing their patented FostaPEX® tubing system in the United States. Viega started production of FostaPEX in November 2009 at the newly constructed manufacturing facility in McPherson, KS. Bob Simmons, director of extrusion at the McPherson plant, commented on the convenience of having FostaPEX readily available. “We used to order huge inventories in order to have enough on hand,” he said. “Now, we’re able to produce it as needed.” By producing FostaPEX themselves, Viega is able to set the standards for quality and design of the FostaPEX system. “We have a lot higher control over the quality and consistency of the product now,” Simmons said. “We do a welded seam as opposed to an overlapped glued seam on the aluminum layer.” A distinctively versatile product, FostaPEX balances stability with flexibility to create a unique tubing system that not only bends with ease but also holds its shape. Outer layers of aluminum and PE make this feature possible, while simultaneously extending UV protection. FostaPEX is a lead-free oxygen barrier pipe, which makes it compatible not only with potable water systems but also in hydronic applications. FostaPEX also has a low coefficient of expansion compared to standard PEX products and, since one fitting system connects to all types of ViegaPEX™ tubing including FostaPEX, distributors need only one inventory and contractors need only one tool set. “Manufacturing FostaPEX domestically has been a lot of work but it’s definitely been a rewarding process,” Simmons said. “And as awareness and sales grow, it’ll be a good product for us.” About Viega Since 1899, Viega remains unmatched in revolutionary residential and commercial plumbing and heating by manufacturing and supplying the highest quality products in the world. In 2006, the company moved its North American headquarters to Wichita, KS. Today, Viega has opened a new 439,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing and logistics facility in McPherson, KS. With innovative systems like copper and stainless ProPress®, ProRadiant® and PureFlow®, Viega is the answer for all your plumbing questions. For more information, visit www.viega.com. A. O. Smith Voltex Hybrid Unit Whether homeowners are looking to help the environment or simply save money on their monthly energy bill, they have a strong incentive to explore the latest “green” technologies from A. O. Smith. This is especially true for homeowners who must choose an electric water heater because they do not have access to natural gas or propane in their home. Electricity is typically the costliest way to heat water. As an A. O. Smith employee, Jeff Storie knew this fact all too well. His own home in Sango, TN, was equipped with a conventional 50-gallon electric water heater that was more than five years old. Storie also knew that A. O. Smith was ready to introduce a brand new hybrid electric model into the market that could significantly reduce his monthly power bill. He jumped at the chance to install one in his own home. The new Voltex™ hybrid electric water heater brings together the proven reliability of a standard A. O. Smith electric water heater with advanced heat pump technology. The heat pump makes the Voltex more than twice as energy efficient as an ordinary electric unit. “When you see an opportunity to slash the monthly cost of operating your water heater by more than 50 percent, it’s a no-brainer,” says Storie, who serves as national manager of contractor marketing for A. O. Smith. “I couldn’t wait to bring the Voltex into my own home to see the impact firsthand.” The A. O. Smith Voltex operates at 2.3 EF, making it the only type of electric water heater that is Energy Star-rated. The heat pump allows it to pull heat out of the surrounding air, like an air conditioner in reverse. That heat is then transferred to the water in the tank. This is a very efficient way to heat water. The byproduct is cooler and dehumidified ambient air. There are four people living in the Storie home, which measures 2,750 square feet and contains three full bathrooms. “Our master bathroom has a large garden tub and my 9-year-old daughter fills it almost every night,” Storie says. “The larger 80-gallon capacity with our Voltex does a great job of filling the tub and recovering quickly after the bath.” The energy savings are easy to see on the family’s monthly power bill. In September 2009, the first full month of operation, the family’s overall use of electricity dropped 481 kilowatt hours compared with the previous September. That amounts to $51 off the bill for one month alone. The savings continued to rack up in October with 355 kilowatt hours less electricity use compared with the previous year, 483 kilowatt hours less in November and 522 kilowatt hours less in December. If this trend continues, the Storie family can expect to save more than $500 annually in the cost of operation for their water heating. The Voltex is also eligible for a federal tax credit up to $1,500, or 30 percent of its total installed cost, as well as many other state and local rebates. Allied Fitting is proud to be qualified for Class 1 nuclear sector production. Headquartered in Nibbiano, Italy, the Group employs 1,000 people in 25 locations worldwide. Production capacity will be nearly doubled when two new plants in Italy and China go online in the second half of 2010. A strong commitment and investment in employees, customer service, technology, health and safety, marketing and communications has fueled rapid growth in all areas of the world: from Europe to the United States, from China to India, from the Middle East to Africa and Australia since the group’s founding in 2000. Group manufacturing companies include Tri-Lad in Canada and Tectubi that is based in Italy. “Warren is proud to become a part of such an illustrious, international organization,” remarked David Nunn, senior vice president of sales and marketing. “We are excited about the opportunity to expand our inventory and eventually our capabilities to the Allied Group’s worldwide locations.” For more information, visit www.warrenalloy.com. Missouri Plumbing Pro Carl Helt expects Helt Plumbing crews to remove their shoes before entering customers’ homes. “We’ve built our hard-earned reputation by treating customers with decency and respect,” he says. “And we’ve stayed in business by getting the job done right.” With nearly 50 years of service as a plumbing and drain cleaning expert, Helt insists on insuring those high professional and performance standards with superior equipment. “When I started my own business in the early ’70’s, I became the third owner of a second-hand General Sewermatic™,” he recalls. “And I passed that drain cleaner to a fourth plumber — my brother-in-law. For all I know it’s still working today!” That sort of durable dependability made Carl Helt a lifelong General customer. And that’s why he especially loves Speedrooter 91™. “We used it on four separate jobs in a day and it came through every time!” Helt quickly adds. Power and Reliability Meet Professional Needs With plenty of raw power for long, tough jobs, field-proven Speedrooter 91 blends rugged reliability with optimal control and ease-of-use. With 80% of his activity in residential work, Helt knows his performance touches the lives of ordinary people. “We believe in treating customers like ourselves,” he declares. “With reliable equipment, we clear blockages faster — and spare customers unnecessary inconvenience.” That’s why he likes the power and reach of Speedrooter 91. “It’s my ‘workhorse,’” Helt laughs. “Speedrooter means service with a Capital S!” The latest version — Speedrooter 92 — can really take a beating. The durable design features a braced frame at key stress points, a drum supported front and rear for longer bearing wear, and Flexicore® cable — the industry standard for toughness. Heavy duty wire tightly coiled around 49-strand aircraft-type wire rope, General’s heavy duty Flexicore cable blends superior kinking resistance and unequalled strength with the right amount of flexibility. It’s so tough that it carries the best warranty in the business — one-year protection against breakage. User-Friendly Innovations Boost Productivity One person can easily move Speedrooter onto a t ruck — or around the job. The adjustable height, swept-back handle also augments maneuvering leverage. “It’s great for one-man operation,” Helt remarks. “I can handle Speedrooter with no trouble!” Professionals like Carl Helt also appreciate General’s interchangeable drums with see-through cages to gauge remaining cable. Quickly switch from 3/4” or 5/8” cables to a small drum with 1/2” cable to clear smaller lines. Helt’s General drain cleaning arsenal also includes Mini-Rooter for smaller jobs — and two innovative Kinetic Water Rams™ that quickly and cleanly clear clogs with compressed air power. “We also keep two Flexicore closet augers on each truck — and use these several times each week,” Helt adds. “We have used ‘brand X junk’ in the past and have lost count of how many of those we’ve tossed into the trash!” But the Speedrooter remains Carl Helt’s favorite. “It’s so reliable and versatile,” he concludes. “I just send the guys out — and know we’ll get the job done!” For more information, visit www.drainbrain.com. Why Use a Condensing Gas Boiler Slant/Fin Hot water baseboard heating systems work great with high efficiency modulating/condensing boilers. Some people think S/F baseboard is for high temperature hot water systems and not well suited for use with a high efficiency modcon boiler where a water temperature below 130°F is required to operate efficently. Actually baseboard heat delivers great comfort with low water temperatures that are below 130°F. Slant/Fin publishes residential and commercial baseboard output ratings at water temperatures ranging from 110°F to 220°F on their Web site, www.slantfin.com. New baseboard heating system design is easy, just use the baseboard output rating based on a lower water temperature. With new well insulated energy efficient homes the amount of baseboard required will often be less than the length of the room’s outside wall. By increasing the coverage of baseboard on outside walls, heating comfort increases. After all, baseboard is “perimeter heat”. Sizing a replacement boiler for existing homes requires completing a heat loss. With the heat loss it is easy to determine if the installed baseboard’s output will overcome the heat loss when lower water temperatures are used. Many contractors used to install “wall to wall” baseboard, this resulted in an abundance of baseboard being installed. Many homeowners increased the energy efficiency of their homes by improving their home’s insulation, windows and doors. Installed baseboard is often sufficient to heat older homes when lower water temperatures are used. Slant/Fin’s new modulating/condensing boilers adjust their fuel input to closely match a home’s actual heat loss. These boilers also have outdoor water temperature reset as a standard feature. By modulating the water temperature being circulated through the baseboard, the baseboard’s heat output closely matches a home’s heat loss. The boiler’s output modulates to meet the home’s heat loss as outdoor weather changes. The result is improved comfort conditioning with less fuel consumption. High efficiency boilers work great with hot water baseboard heat. A Brookhaven National Laboratory study published October 2004 concluded that condensing boilers used in homes with baseboard radiators can achieve energy efficiency benefits. The study recommends use of an outdoor reset control that modulates the water temperature supplied to the baseboards. In the test 96% of the heating season load can be met with the boiler operating in the condensing mode for natural gas. The boilers used in the study were fixed input, therefore boiler input did not modulate as current day modcom boilers. See BNL-73314-2004-IR “Hydronic Baseboard Thermal Distribution System with Outdoor Reset Control to Enable the Use of a Condensing Boiler”. Slant/Fin manufactures the Lynx, Bobcat and Jaguar series modcon boilers ranging from high fires of 85,000 Mbh to 390,000 Mbh inputs. These modcon boilers have a built-in outdoor reset and modulating inputs. Slant/Fin also manufactures a wide baseboard selection starting with a low profile 7-inch residential baseboard up to 28- inch high triple tier commercial radiation. Slant/ Fin products are installed as far north as Barrow, AK, and as far south as the South Pole. Founded in 1949, Slant/Fin is an American manufacturer based in Greenvale, NY. T&S Brass T&S Brass is continuously looking at ways to improve its product offering — whether that means increasing the efficiency of a faucet or making it easier to install. One thing that has stayed the same, however, is the company’s commitment to delivering quality, reliable products. From aerators to sensor faucets, T&S Brass manufactures plumbing products that can withstand the toughest commercial applications. Since 1947, when T&S Brass developed the first pre-rinse unit, the manufacturer has been a leader in providing innovative equipment solutions. And when it comes to low-lead laws, the Buy American Act, LEED, and a general concern for the environment, T&S Brass continues to lead the way. Buy American Act T&S Brass offers more than 5,000 products and parts that meet the Buy American Act (BAA), federal legislation that requires the U. S. government to prefer American products in its purchases. These products are primarily manufactured, assembled and distributed from the T&S Brass headquarters in Travelers Rest, SC. T&S Brass products that are BAA-compliant include: faucets and components; spray valves and pre-rinse units; pot, kettle and glass fillers; appliance connectors; safety equipment and more. These products are available for order with 24-hour Quick Ship. Low Lead In 2009, the T&S Brass U.S. facility converted all of its wrought components to Eco Brass (leadfree) alloys. All products now manufactured from this facility meet new lead reduction legislation set forth by California Assembly Bill 1953 (AB1953). By converting to the Eco Brass alloy, T&S Brass models will deliver the same quality and performance as other T&S products. To ensure that the new products meet T&S’ exacting standards, the line has been through vigorous testing and has shown no difference in strength or finish. LEED When it comes to green building projects, T&S Brass faucets and other equipment can help a building receive points to be certified. T&S Brass products can help contribute to two of the five categories of LEED performance — Water Efficiency and Materials and Resources. Several models also comply with EPAct 2005, saving you water, energy and money. In fact, many of the water-efficient faucets, fittings, and pre-rinse units have been on the market for over a decade. Sustainability T&S offers thousands of water and energy-saving products and is committed to engineering new and improved models. Two of the latest products that T&S Brass has developed are the B-0108-C and the B-0107-C low-flow spray valves. The federal limit on spray valves is currently set at 1.6 gallons per minute (gpm). Taking a proactive step in the industry, the new spray valves will offer a flow rate at 0.65 gpm. What does this mean for operations? By switching from a 1.6 gpm spray valve to a 0.65 gpm spray valve, an operation can save nearly 100,000 gallons of water a year (based on five hours of use a day). This has a significant impact on the environment and overall operating costs. To learn more about T&S Brass, visit www.tsbrass.comor follow on Twitter (@tsbrass). VAI’s S2K for Manufacturing Illuminates Operations Situation Architectural lighting is a feature present in almost every public space. Naturally, the design, manufacture and distribution of these products is paramount to architectural lighting companies, which require an effective Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software system to efficiently integrate all aspects of the business from high level financials to basic warehousing tasks. When BEGA-US found its existing ERP software was not functioning optimally, the firm turned to Vormittag Associates, Inc. (VAI) to find the best solution to replace its outdated system. Customer Profile Founded in 1985 as a joint venture partnership with the managing partners of BEGA, located in Menden, Germany, BEGAUS is a privately held U.S. corporation, headquartered in Carpinteria, CA. BEGA designs, manufactures and supplies lighting products of superior quality for a broad range of both interior and exterior applications. Problem An outdated product configurator and a disparate accounting system proved challenging to BEGA’s daily operations. The company’s product configurator lacked the ability to price materials as orders were built, leaving BEGA to manually calculate cost for thousands of items. This made estimating and billing difficult. In addition, the company’s old menu screen did not have the point, click and drill-down capabilities of a more modern graphical user interface (GUI). GUI provides a user-friendly, windowslike environment, which BEGA desired. Process BEGA researched many solutions before deciding that VAI was best suited to meet its specific needs. VAI worked directly with BEGA to assess the company’s requirements and devise the appropriate solution set. After the initial consultation, VAI’s S2K for Manufacturing went live at BEGA and the implementation directly and positively impacted all aspects of the business. The most prominent improvement is a direct result of the customized Sales Tool (product configurator), which allows team members to enter a base item number and then choose from several options, such as color and wattage. The system then identifies an itemized parts list, assigns an order number and calculates a cost estimate automatically — saving the company precious time, money and resources. Solution VAI’s S2K for Manufacturing has prov ideda platform for BEGA to significantly improve its operating efficiency and streamline data management. The solution’s top-down view frees management to analyze aggregate financial records in realtime, finding problems before they occur. Concurrently, the instantaneous data retrieval capabilities make customer interactions easy and efficient. Sales employees can check current stock levels before taking an order, allowing staff to predict production times accurately. Results and Benefits The implementation has been an outstanding success for BEGA and prepared the company for its largest growth year on record. Production times have decreased and customer satisfaction ratings have increased. Additionally, the simplified sales order system has reduced order entry times and improved efficiency. With VAI’s S2K for Manufacturing, BEGA’s path to success is well lit, and growing. Showroom Solutions: American Standard interviews one successful showroom customer every month to create a library of best practices, which can be found at www.americanstandard.com/spotlight. Among the success factors reported in the last 12 months: Simplifying Vendor Lines… Reduce the number of manufacturers to deepen relationships and simplify inventory. NEXT Plumbing Supply President David Lopatin recently told us, “Manufacturers in general have been widening their breadth of product, which has allowed us to partner with a select few that have more product lines.” Lopatin believes fewer brands with wider variety on the showroom floor is more appealing to NEXT Plumbing Supply customers. “When customers are presented with lots of product lines, it’s often confusing to them, and ultimately they give up,” explains Lopatin. “By narrowing down the manufacturers to those that are most respected in the industry and that have the broadest range of products, it becomes less confusing. In other words, it enables us to offer a more complete solution to all our customers.” …While Maximizing Customer Choice “American Standard is a key partner in enabling us to become more profitable through their diverse product line and the exceptional value they’re known for,” says Scott Middleton, manager of Alliance, Oh-based Robertson Heating Supply Co.’s five Kitchen and Bath Gallery showrooms. “Manufacturers like American Standard give each of our onsite showroom managers the ability and freedom to tailor their showroom and marketing to their specific market, while maintaining continuity with their counterparts. Robertson Heating Supply Co. Was the 2009 Wholesaler of the Year for Supply House Times. Says Paul Ardente, partner and head of retail sales at Rhode-Island-based WaterSpot Showrooms: “We chose American Standard, because it’s a very high quality product. Luxury toilets such as the Porcher® Chapeau are extraordinarily functional and aesthetically appealing. Their faucets are excellent, and they continue to bring innovations like Speed Connect® drains — which plumbers love — to market, in addition to high-end designs.” “We focus most of our displays on American Standard and its Jado/Porcher brands because of their positive reputation,” says Scott Murphy, assistant manager and showroom manager at Ocala Winnelson Co. In Ocala, FL. “American Standard has everything from furniture to toilets, and sinks to countertops, and there are styles to suit most every taste.” …Especially in Green “This is a great selling point for the times we live in. Our customers love that they can select a water efficient product — like the Tropic® FloWise® toilet — and build an entire bath suite around it,” says Jenn Franco, showroom manager at AquaBella Kitchen & Bath Showroom in Union City, CA. “There are a limited number of manufacturers offering green products with the high-end design of American Standard.” Join the Success Story Put our solutions to work in your showroom.
