Food and Beverage Packaging May 2012 : Page-31A beverage company transitioned its drink pack-aging from glass to aluminum for the redesign of their sparkling energy waters and organic energy drinks, citing consumer demand for a larger size with more portability. Hiball Inc. transitioned from glass bottles to 16-ounce aluminum cans from Ball Corp. (www.ball.com), which feature “cold activa-tion” graphics using thermochromic ink by Chromatic Technologies Inc. (www.ctiinks.com). The small white bubbles on the can turn from white to blue when the internal tempera-ture of the beverage reaches 45 de-grees Fahrenheit, indicating perfect temperature for drinking. It isn’t just beverages that are un-veiling new and innovative ideas in packaging; three food companies are also sprucing up their containers. Making an aesthetic splash is one butter company’s new printing pro-cess for its colorful tubs of Twisted Butter. Twisted Foods Co. teamed up with Polytainers (www.poly-tainersinc.com) to create a unique package with quality images. Twist-ed Foods uses dry offset printing, a technique that allows for specialized ink to be printed directly onto a plas-tic surface. What makes Twisted But-ter’s packaging process distinct is the 8-color printing station using Poly-Tone TM HD printing. PolyTone HD printing uses Poly-tainer’s TruTone separation, resulting in rich, clean colors and stylized food shots. This unique printing process creates superior images not often seen in conventional dry offset printing. Another container, this time a PET nut container, is the winner of an IoPP design award from the 2012 Ameristar Package Competition in the food segment.
