INDUSTRY GE Invests in German Facility’s Expansion BILLERICA,MA—GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies announces a $1M investment to expand its Odelzhausen, Germany, facility, which designs and manufactures Rheonik coriolis flow meters used in the oil and gas and power generation sectors. The expansion will create a world-class flow meter calibration center to test New President-Elect for British NDT Institute NORTHAMPTON, UNITED KINGDOM—At a general meeting and council meeting held in Northampton, Steve Lavender was elected as president- elect of the British Institute of NDT (BINDT) for 2010 to fill the vacancy left by the departure of Dr. Robin Shipp. The president-elect is normally chosen from the existing vice presidents, however Lavender was eligible for election follow- ing his six-year stint as a vice president fromJanuary 2000 toDecember 2005. Lavender is co-managing direc- tor of Lavender International NDT Consultancy Services Ltd., the highly respected trainer, examiner and Level 3 consultancy company based in Penistone, Sheffield. He has been involved with the Institute since 1982, when he joined the early personnel certi- fication in NDT (PCN) specialist boards. Since then he has (apart from vice presi- dent) been a part of many PCN com- mittees including working groups, the general technical committee and, more recently, he has been appointed vice chair of the newly-structured certification management committee (CMC). He is a member of BINDT’s Yorkshire branch. Outside the United Kingdom, he has a strong association with the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT). He was key in the creation of the North Atlantic Section in 1993 and is currently ASNT’s section operations council awards division chair and on the board of directors selection commit- tee. He is one of a select few having both the ASNT and BINDT Fellow Award. ASTMInitiates New Program for Product and Personnel Conformance WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, PA—At its October 2009 meeting, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) board of directors authorized ASTM’smanagement to develop the capability to offer certification ser- vices. Titled the ASTM International Certification Program, the new initiative is sponsored by ASTMInternational and offers the opportunity for certification of products (materials, products, services and systems) as well as personnel. New Electromagnetic NDE Company Founded HERTFORDSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM—Ether NDE Ltd. was founded by Mike Reilly and John Hansen. Reilly was previously group managing director of Sonatest plc from 1989 to 2009, during which time the group grew from a $2 million to $25 million business. Hansen was, until recently, senior staff engineer for eddy current NDT at GE Inspection Technologies, St Albans, United Kingdom (previously Hocking NDT). He is chairman of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) Trade Group and a member of both the Electromagnetic and DICONDE ASTM Committees. The founders of Ether NDE have a combined industry experi- ence of 58 years. From the outset, Ether NDE will focus on eddy current probe design, probe repair services, ET/NDT acces- sories and consultancy, as well as repre- senting selected international manufac- turers of electromagnetic test equipment and accessories. By August 2010, a stan- dard range of eddy current catalogue probes will be added to the portfolio.
