Putting the Puzzle Together The Critical Relationship Between Bioremediation Success and Microbiological Consulting and Designer Bacteria CI provides microbiological expertise, products and ser-vices to help insure success by doing it right the first time. We accomplish this by a unique lab-based consulting arrangement between BCI and our engineering clients. In addi-tion to anaerobic dechlorination of TCE and related compounds discussed below, BCI also offers services for in situ aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of a wide range of compounds. B BCI Works Closely with Its Clients. Do it Right the First Time. EPA does not often change its Record of Decision (ROD) from ‘Pump and Treat’ to AISB (Accelerated In Situ Bioremediation), but that’s exactly what happened last year at the Malvern TCE Superfund Site in Penn-sylvania. This turnaround was achieved by O’Brien & Gere Engi-neers, Inc. (OBG) together with Bioremediation Consulting, Inc. (BCI), which provided analysis, bioremediation consulting, and Designer Bacteria (DB). Designer Bacteria are Critical. BCI began working with OBG in 2006 to design a pilot project based on a successful BCI microcosm remediation simulation, using contaminated site groundwater and BCI’s Designer Bacteria. Starting with BCI’s base bacterial culture, the Designer Bacteria (DB) culture was created by growth in site groundwater to establish their ability to dechlorinate PCE, TCE, DCE and VC, as well as 1,1,1-TCA, and 1,1-DCA. In addition to the chlorinated contaminants, the DB had to develop the ability to resist the toxic effects of (and biode-grade) a high concentration of another contaminant, methanol. BCI worked closely with OBG during the pilot test to provide input for preparing the site for bioaugmentation, on injection of the Designer Bacteria, rapid turnaround of monitoring analyses, and advice on continuing adjustments to maintain optimal conditions for biological dechlorination. After completion of the Pilot Project, the EPA changed its ROD through an Explanation of Significant Differences (ESD) from pump and treat using ex situ treatment to AISB, and approved the full scale bioremediation project on an accelerated design and construction schedule. AISB is now well underway. BCI Approach. BCI is prepared to help its engineering clients achieve success, with the following integrated services: • Characterization of site groundwater to answer the question “what are the options?”. • Microcosm Experiments to develop and verify a successful bioremediation plan. • Designer Bacteria (DB) acclimated to your site groundwater and your combination of contaminants. • Rapid Turn-around Analysis of Monitoring samples to track your site chemistry, and provide interpretation of data in terms of critical microbial functions. While each service is available separately, the benefit to your project will be enhanced when these interlocking services are combined.
